Belgian TV presenter and actor Tom Waes faced public backlash after failing to show up in court when the judge delivered a verdict about his dangerous, alcohol-infused driving incident. Many people took offense, feeling he was acting arrogantly, especially with his history of traffic violations. Tom, however, responded calmly, explaining that in Belgium, it is not uncommon to skip a verdict hearing.
Appearing on Eva Jinek’s Talk Show
Tom recently appeared on Eva Jinek’s talk show to openly discuss the incident. Dutch media commentator Angela de Jong had previously urged Eva to be strict and ask tough questions. Eva delivered, showing no restraint and digging into all the hard topics.
Criticism Over Court Absence
Tom's absence at the court verdict sparked strong criticism. Dutch TV expert Tina Nijkamp was clear in her disapproval, pointing out that with ten previous convictions—including one for drunk driving—missing the verdict gave the impression of “star behavior” and a lack of respect for the process. According to critics, with so many prior mistakes, Tom should have been present to take responsibility, especially for something this serious.
Tom Explains His Absence
Tom clarified that it wasn’t his own decision to stay away; his lawyer advised him not to attend, saying it’s standard practice in Belgium for defendants to skip the verdict and only be present at the actual hearing. Tom emphasized he attended the hearing itself, which is already unusual in Belgium. He stated that he made a conscious effort to take responsibility by being there for an hour during the court proceedings.
Questions About Alcohol Use
Eva Jinek asked Tom directly if he had a problem with alcohol. He denied this, citing his busy work schedule (300 days a year) as a reason he rarely drinks. However, Tom admitted that when he does go out, he sometimes fails to manage his limits, as was the case in this incident. Eva pressed the point that the issue wasn’t just unwinding, but the very dangerous choice to drive under the influence—risking both his own life and the lives of others, as well as his entire career.
Sober for Six Months Since the Incident
Tom revealed he hasn’t drunk alcohol in the six months since the incident and feels much better for it. He’s even considering quitting entirely, confirming he will never again drive after drinking. He also mentioned he remembers nothing from that night—only entering a restaurant and waking up a day and a half later in the hospital with his girlfriend at his side.
Debate Over the Alcohol Interlock
Eva brought up the issue of the alcohol interlock (an in-car breathalyzer) ordered by the court. Tom requested an exception due to his work; for shows like ‘Undercover,’ he needs to drive multiple cars, and it wouldn’t be possible to install the device in all of them. Though his lawyer also considered disputing the breathalyzer’s accuracy, Tom decided not to challenge the outcome; he wanted to take responsibility. Ultimately, the exception was not granted, and the device has been installed in his private car. How this will be addressed in his television roles remains to be seen.
Public Perception and Moving Forward
Tom Waes spoke frankly about his mistakes and expressed his regret. However, criticism remains, especially given his prior offenses. Many believe that, as a public figure, he should demonstrate greater accountability. Whether he can regain public trust remains to be seen.
