Severe Storms Paralyze Alexandria with Hail, Flash Floods, and Power Outages

On Saturday, Egypt’s coastal city of Alexandria was struck by a severe series of thunderstorms and hailstorms, resulting in flash floods, widespread power outages, and considerable damage across multiple districts. Authorities described it as one of the most intense storms the city has faced in recent years, initiating a rapid emergency response.

The city was battered by heavy rain, hail, and rare snowfall, disrupting daily life. Alexandria University postponed final exams for the 2024–2025 academic year, and local education authorities delayed middle school exams due to severe traffic disruption caused by the storm.

High winds and surging waves forced the Alexandria Port Authority to close both the Alexandria and Dekheila harbours, safeguarding maritime operations as conditions deteriorated.

The Alexandria Governorate declared a maximum emergency alert level. Civil defence units, utility crews, and traffic police worked to clear flooded streets and restore traffic. Emergency responders attended a residential building collapse in the El-Raml district and partial collapses in two buildings in the Sporting area, but no casualties were reported.

Storm damage included uprooted trees, downed streetlights and billboards, especially along the Corniche and major highways, resulting in widespread power outages. Fishing activities were temporarily suspended and residents were warned to avoid flooded and low-lying areas.

According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, the unstable weather is expected to continue into Sunday morning with thunderstorms, winds up to 50 km/h, and hazardous Mediterranean waves. Residents were urged to stay indoors for safety.

Authorities reduced water pressure in western Alexandria and Montaza to aid the drainage system. Rapid-response teams removed debris, cleared trees, and repaired infrastructure to facilitate runoff and reopen roads.

The Ministry of Health raised alerts in public hospitals and clinics, prepared ambulance fleets, and medical personnel. No injuries or fatalities have been reported, but citizens are urged to follow safety guidance.

Emergency services positioned ambulances in high-risk areas. The Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Egyptian Red Crescent coordinated support for vulnerable residents, assisting with evacuations and stranded motorists despite difficult conditions.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s office is monitoring the crisis and urges citizens to prioritize safety and cooperate with emergency workers.
