Egypt’s Pharmaceutical Market Hits EGP 309 Billion in 2024, Marking 43% Growth
Egypt’s pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309 billion in sales in 2024, rising from EGP 216 billion in 2023 — a remarkable 43% year-on-year increase. This was announced by Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), during the EDA’s 15th Board of Directors meeting.
The meeting gathered key government leaders including Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din.
Strategic Updates and Digital Transformation
Among the major topics discussed were updates from the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia, along with ongoing progress in the digital transformation of the Authority. These initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment.
International Accreditation and Global Role
A highlight of the meeting was the EDA’s achievement of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Maturity Level 3 status for medicines regulation in December 2024, complementing its previous vaccine regulation recognition in March 2022. Additionally, WHO and European Union accreditations affirm the EDA’s laboratories as globally recognized reference labs.
The EDA is playing a leading role in regulatory capacity-building across Arab and African regions, supported by WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation.
Regional Excellence and Professional Development
The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) designated the EDA’s Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). This allowed the EDA to conduct 12 international training programs for countries such as Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria.
Further, the EDA is advancing internship initiatives, including piloting a new Learning Management System (LMS) platform to boost professional training and knowledge sharing.
Egypt’s pharmaceutical industry is thus solidifying its position as a major regional and global player via robust digital transformation and international recognition.
