Egypt Hosts 3rd International Climate and Environment Conference to Advance Sustainable Innovation

Egypt officially inaugurated the third International Conference on Climate and Environment on Tuesday, uniting senior government officials, leading academics, religious leaders, and policy experts to confront urgent environmental challenges and explore innovative solutions for sustainable development.

Organized under the auspices of the Prime Minister and the Arab League, the event is coordinated by Nile University’s School of Continuing Education in partnership with the Engineers for Sustainable Egypt Foundation, and supported by various Egyptian ministries. This year’s conference coincided with World Environment Day, focusing on global action and environmental innovation.

Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, representing Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, underscored the key role of universities and research institutions in policy-driven innovation and raising public environmental awareness. He emphasized climate change as a critical global threat and Egypt’s commitment to integrating climate priorities into national research and international academic collaborations.

The conference featured notable figures such as former Foreign Minister Amr Moussa; Grand Mufti Nazir Ayad; climate economist and COP representative Mahmoud Mohieldin (virtually); and Mahmoud Fathallah from the Arab League’s Department of Environmental Affairs.

Minister of Religious Endowments Osama Al-Azhari announced a partnership with Nile University's faculties to enhance environmental education and stewardship at all societal levels.

Nile University President Wael Akl highlighted achievements in renewable energy, smart agriculture, climate modeling, water management, and AI-powered early warning systems. He proposed launching a national “Science Valley” to promote green entrepreneurship aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Mohamed Kamel, Chair of Engineers for Sustainable Egypt Foundation, outlined plans for the 2025 conference to support the UN Environment Programme’s efforts to end plastic pollution and launch awards for impactful environmental innovation.

Dean Nevine Abdel Khalek detailed the mission to raise climate change awareness, advance sustainable development, and celebrate environmental innovation.

Core sessions addressed EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), circular economy frameworks, green hydrogen technologies, and AI applications in water and environment management.

Panel discussions focused on sustainable urban development, Egypt’s Vision 2030, green investment, and sustainable consumption and production. Exhibitions showcased local innovations, and a plastic reduction roundtable shared waste-cutting solutions. Additional sessions explored transforming deserts into eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture zones, modeling environmental resilience and future tourism.
