Texas GOP Rep. Brandon Gill Calls for Ilhan Omar's Deportation Amid Viral Video Controversy
Texas GOP Representative Brandon Gill has caused controversy after publicly demanding the deportation of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), stating America would be better without her. Gill posted on social media platform X, saying: “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were deported back to Somalia.”
The statement came as a video circulated showing Omar advising Somali immigrants, some possibly undocumented, on how to handle federal immigration officials. Conservative commentator Greg Price spread the video, accusing Omar of “hosting workshops for Somalians living in the country illegally to advise them on how to avoid being deported.”
The online reaction was sharply divided. Many supported Gill’s call, labeling Omar “anti-American” and demanding her expulsion. Others accused Omar of encouraging illegal behavior by advising immigrants on evading deportation.
Gill doubled down, claiming Omar should never have been allowed into the country, with his spokesperson emphasizing concerns about her loyalties and prioritizing undocumented immigrants over American citizens.
The viral video shows Omar advising Somali individuals at risk of deportation:
“You are not obligated to answer their questions. Simply state that you have been advised by a lawyer not to respond. You are not required to disclose your name, immigration status, or how you entered the country. Educate yourself on the laws, be prepared, and avoid sharing information you do not wish to disclose.”
This guidance sparked debate—critics claim she undermines U.S. immigration laws, while supporters argue she is informing people of their legal rights, common in legal advocacy.
When interviewed by journalist Mehdi Hasan about Gill’s remarks, Omar called them “ridiculous” and criticized the decline of political discourse, stating it was embarrassing for Congress and the nation, and questioned how critical thinking has eroded to allow such statements and political outcomes.
This dispute underscores the deep political polarization in the U.S., especially on immigration and national identity. Gill reflects hardline Republican rhetoric, while Omar emphasizes legal protections for marginalized immigrants. As elections approach, deportation, citizenship, and loyalty remain key political flashpoints.
