Interview with Volkert van der G. Takes a Wrong Turn: ‘That Man Is Not Well’
The left-wing journalistic platform Left Laser has sparked controversy following a remarkable encounter with Volkert van der Graaf, the man notorious for killing Pim Fortuyn in 2002. The incident occurred during what seemed like an ordinary bike ride for Van der Graaf. What began as an attempt at an impromptu interview escalated quickly into a physical confrontation.
Left Laser was established in 2022 by Bob Sneevliet, also known as Robert Jim Scholte. The YouTube channel is recognized for outspoken leftist views and for confronting especially right-wing politicians with tough questions. In addition to YouTube, the channel has a significant presence on TikTok and Instagram.
Recently, the Left Laser crew unexpectedly came face-to-face with Volkert van der Graaf—once an environmental activist, but more infamous for the murder of politician Pim Fortuyn. On May 6, 2002, Van der Graaf shot Fortuyn at the Mediapark in Hilversum. The act shocked the nation and led to intense public and political debate. Van der Graaf was sentenced to 18 years in prison and was released on parole in 2014, living out of the public eye after his full release in 2020.
Despite Van der Graaf’s reputation for left-leaning activism, there was little sense of kinship between him and the Left Laser team. During filming, the team from the YouTube channel approached him. It’s not clear what exactly was said, but the situation escalated rapidly. Van der Graaf fell, and a scuffle broke out in which film team members were reportedly attacked.
Footage shows the confrontation becoming physical, but it’s not clear who started the altercation. Left Laser stated their intention was only to ask Van der Graaf questions. The former activist, however, reacted agitated and aggressively. In a statement, the team said: “We wanted to have a conversation about his past and the moral implications of his act. That went differently than expected.”
As of now, Van der Graaf has not responded to the incident. It’s also unclear whether any reports have been filed regarding the altercation, and the police are, so far, not involved.
The encounter raises questions about journalistic boundaries, privacy, and safety. Although Left Laser often approaches controversial figures for interviews, the step of seeking out a convicted murderer is a sensitive one. It has triggered debate about balancing public interest and personal freedom after imprisonment.
The incident has also provoked reactions within left-wing circles. Some believe Left Laser went too far by ambushing Van der Graaf unexpectedly. Others argue his past keeps him a public figure, and critical questions remain legitimate.
Left Laser has now published the full episode online, including parts of the confrontation. Host Sneevliet reflects on the event: “It was not our intention to provoke anyone,” he says. “But it’s important to ask questions, especially of those with a history like this.”
The episode has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with the audience divided. Some praise the journalistic boldness, while others believe the platform has crossed a line.
For now, the incident appears to remain an isolated event, but it sheds new light on the lasting impact of Fortuyn’s murder, more than twenty years later. That Van der Graaf is in the news once again underlines how sensitive his name remains in Dutch public debate.
