Party Store in Hoorn Removes Memphis Depay Sweatband from Orange-Themed Ape Amidst Controversy
A party store in the North Holland town of Hoorn faced backlash after dressing a large ape statue outside its entrance in an orange outfit themed for the European Football Championship. The ape wore a headband with the number ten, referencing Dutch footballer Memphis Depay, who wears number ten and a white sweatband for Euro 2024.
The store intended to capitalize on Dutch football enthusiasm and encourage sales of orange decorations, including the popular Depay-style headband. However, the We Promise foundation, an organization opposing discrimination, argued that the ape's outfit evoked racial stereotypes. They reported the case to the National Discrimination Reporting Center, sparking local controversy.
In response, the shop apologized, clarifying it did not intend offense and quickly replaced the headband with an orange cap and feather boa to avoid further misunderstanding. The incident has fueled debate on whether such representations constitute racism or reflect society’s heightened sensitivity in 2024.
This episode highlights the complex intersection of cultural symbols, intent, and public perception in contemporary society.
