Elon Musk Blasts Trump’s 'Pork-Filled' Spending Bill: Fallout on Capitol Hill

Just days after stepping down from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk has launched a harsh critique against Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” On social media and in media appearances, Musk labeled the legislation “a disgusting abomination” in a diatribe that’s reverberated across Capitol Hill.

Once considered Trump’s unofficial adviser on government reform, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO is now openly distancing himself from the administration’s latest fiscal initiative. The so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed by only a single vote in the House on May 22, has been promoted by the White House as a bold push to revitalize the U.S. economy. Measures in the bill include temporary tax breaks through 2028 (such as eliminating taxes on tips for service and beauty workers and pausing penalties on overtime), alongside significant increases for military and border security spending.

But Musk sees anything but “efficiency” in the new law.

“Disappointed”

Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning in late May, Musk expressed his “disappointment to see the massive spending bill” due to its impact on the budget deficit and the stated mission of DOGE.

“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful. But I don’t know if it can be both,” Musk said, days before officially resigning from government, setting him at odds with Trump, who has boasted about the package’s scope.

Cuts and Controversies

Controversially, parts of the bill slash Medicaid and SNAP (food stamp) benefits to offset the expected loss in tax revenue. There are also cuts to undocumented immigrants’ healthcare and additional restrictions on gender transition support services. The Congressional Budget Office projects that these reforms could cause 8.6 million people to lose healthcare coverage.

Trump, however, has promoted the bill as game-changing. “We will take a massive step to balancing our Budget by enacting the largest mandatory Spending Cut, EVER, and Americans will get to keep more of their money with the largest Tax Cut, EVER, and no longer taxing Tips, Overtime, or Social Security for Seniors,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

A Personal Attack?

Some Washington insiders speculate Musk’s opposition is personal. Reports indicate that electric vehicle tax credits—key to Tesla’s market—have been stripped. Trump, in the same June 2 social media post, also vowed to repeal Biden’s EV mandate and green tax credits, calling them part of the “GREEN NEW SCAM.”

Further tension emerged as the Federal Aviation Administration excluded Musk’s Starlink satellites from future air traffic management projects, and Trump withdrew the NASA leadership nomination of Jared Isaacman, a known Musk ally.

“A Disgusting Abomination”

Musk, infuriated, took his complaints public. On June 3, he posted on X:
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

He followed up by warning the bill would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion” and “burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,” accusing Congress of “making America bankrupt.”

The White House Responds

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded, “The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change his opinion.”

Musk's Next Move?

Musk’s shift from government insider to outspoken critic represents a major realignment in Washington. With his huge media platform, Musk’s opposition to the “Big Beautiful Bill” could signal the beginning of a more direct challenge to political authority and policy norms.
