Egyptian FM and Visiting Indian MPs Discuss Strategic Ties and Regional Security

Egypt’s Foreign and Emigration Minister, Badr Abdelatty, met on Tuesday with a high-level Indian parliamentary delegation to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and address key regional security issues, including counter-terrorism and the situation in South Asia, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Indian multi-party delegation, led by MP Supriya Sule, arrived in Egypt for a two-day official visit starting from June 2, 2025.

During the talks, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khallaf noted that Minister Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s desire to build on the positive momentum in Egypt-India ties witnessed in recent years. Abdelatty emphasized turning this momentum into concrete measures to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors and highlighted the importance of fully activating the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries, to benefit their peoples further. He also called for leveraging the delegation’s visit to Cairo to initiate regular parliamentary-level institutional cooperation and open new avenues for bilateral initiatives.

Minister Abdelatty took the opportunity to reaffirm Egypt’s solidarity with India following the terrorist attack that took place in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. He referred to the call by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the attack, as well as his own call to his Indian counterpart, reflecting the strong relationship between the two nations and Egypt’s steadfast commitment to humanitarian principles that advocate confronting all forms of terrorism.

He further expressed Egypt’s deep concern about the spread of terrorism, describing it as one of humanity’s most serious security threats. Abdelatty pointed to Egypt’s integrated approach and extensive experience in combating terrorism throughout recent decades.

On regional security, the Minister affirmed Egypt’s support for de-escalation between India and Pakistan—welcoming the recent ceasefire between the two neighbors and stressing the need to resolve outstanding disagreements through dialogue and diplomatic channels. He underlined Egypt's belief that such diplomacy is vital for achieving lasting security and stability in South Asia.

During and prior to their visit, the Indian delegation participated in various high-level engagements. On June 2, they were briefed by India’s Ambassador to Egypt, Suresh Reddy, about the India-Egypt Strategic Partnership, Egypt’s unwavering stance against terrorism, solidarity with India post-Pahalgam attack, and bilateral counter-terrorism initiatives.

The Indian MPs also held meetings at the Egyptian Senate with Senator Hossam Al-Khouly (Mostaqbal Watan Party), MP Hazem Omar (Chairperson of a Foreign Affairs Committee), and other parliamentary figures. They also interacted with MP Karim Darwish, another Foreign Affairs Committee Chair.

Additionally, the MPs engaged in meaningful conversations with former Egyptian ministers, renowned authors, and thinkers. Egypt’s top think-tank, the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs (ECFA), headed by former Foreign Minister Mohamed El-Orabi, hosted the delegation for discussions focusing on terrorism and closer India-Egypt cooperation.

During their visit, the delegation paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Al-Horreya Park in Zamalek, Cairo. The program concluded with a meeting with the Indian community in Egypt, underscoring the importance of the visit and ongoing efforts to fight terrorism through global partnerships.
