Sometimes, the most unexpected things happen right under our noses. While cleaning up outside, I noticed what looked like a long, winding rope across the lawn. At first, I thought nothing of it — until a shimmer caught my eye and I realized it might be a snake.
My heart raced as I took a photo, but when I looked closer, it wasn’t a snake or a rope. Instead, I saw about 150 caterpillars moving together in a perfect single-file line, tightly packed as if led by a hidden leader.
Fascinated, I learned these are likely processionary caterpillars who march together to confuse predators and conserve energy by flattening grass for those behind. Watching them inch through the grass was a humbling reminder of nature’s surprises.
Such a strange and captivating sight right in my own backyard! If you’ve seen a procession like this, you know it’s unforgettable. I still wonder where they headed and if the next season will bring another silent caterpillar parade.
